The first Havana that comes to mind of course is Havana, Cuba. But did you know that Florida has two Havana’s of its own? One is a neighbourhood located in Miami, the other is a small town just north of Tallahassee in the Florida Panhandle close to the state border with Georgia called Havana. Havana’s town motto is “ Florida’s Friendliest Small Town “.
The town was incorporated in 1906 and settlers chose the name Havana due to the fact that the major crop in the area at the time was shade tobacco used as wrappers for fine cigars. At one time the town of Havana produced over 90% of shade tobacco in the entire country. By the 1960’s, the shade tobacco industry in America dried up and the markets had shifted to Central America. Florida’s Havana hit hard times until the early 1980’s when an antique dealer moved into town and started leasing spaces to other antique dealers. Art galleries followed as well and the town eventually became known for antique and art lovers from all around.
Havana also has many beautiful old homes, some of which are on the national Register of Historic Places.
With a small population of just over 2,000 people as of 2024 and a median home sold price of under $300,000, which is below the state average, Havana can be a great town for someone looking for a tight knit community with a small town charm.
Florida is filled with many small and charming communities like Havana that can offer a variety of art and culture.
