As of April 11, 2025, Canadians planning to stay in the United States for more than 30 days are now required to register with the U.S Department of Homeland Security.
If you are a Canadian ( including Snowbirds ) planning to visit the United States for more than 30 days and are crossing the border by land, you may need to do either of the following:
- Complete Form G – 325R using the myUSCIS ( United States Immigration and Citizenship Services ) portal where you will receive a Proof of Alien Registration document.
- Complete an I – 94 form. You can complete the form online several days before you cross the border, otherwise you may be required to fill out the form onsite at the border. * If you have been issued an I – 94 form, you will not need a form G – 325R.
Exemptions:
- Canadians visiting the U.S for short stays under 30 days
- Canadians crossing the border by air or sea
- Canadians holding a Green Card
Important considerations:
- When Canadians cross the U.S border via air or sea, they typically do not need to complete an I – 94 form as they are automatically issued an electronic I – 94 by U.S Border and Customs Protection.
- Failure to comply with the requirements can lead to penalties or other legal ramifications.
- While the new rules may require fingerprinting for some, most Canadians are exempt.
- If required to register, you must carry proof of registration with you during your stay in America.
- You can always check your I – 94 status online
